Aunt Bessie’s Helping Hand

Homelessness is one of the biggest social issues affecting the UK today, with more than 250,000 people currently living without a fixed place to call home. This is where the Aunt Bessie’s Helping Hand Project comes in, seeing colleagues from Aunt Bessie’s volunteering this month to make dinner for all companions and employees at Emmaus Hull & East Riding.

Emmaus offers a home and meaningful work for up to 30 formerly homeless people, known as companions, and is supported by a social enterprise – providing work for the companions by selling second-hand furniture and goods.

Following its partnership with homelessness charity, Shelter, to donate profits from its packs of Homestyle Yorkshire’s in the week leading up to National Yorkshire Pudding Day; Aunt Bessie’s wanted to do more to help the complex and wide-reaching issues of homelessness and so the Helping Hand Project was created.

This is just the first of many steps for Aunt Bessie’s, Emmaus and others, that will hopefully have a real positive impact to those dealing with the issue.

In the pear-suit of a happier way to eat and live

Great to see that our colleagues at Abel & Cole are supporting The Soil Association’s Food for Life programme, joining others to help people discover a better and happier way to eat and live.

Food for Life is about making good food the easy choice for everyone. The programme focuses on working with schools, nurseries, hospitals and care homes, to teach people where their food comes from, how it’s grown and cooked, and the importance of well-sourced ingredients.

Abel and Cole is currently on the lookout for ten schools or nurseries to sponsor for the Food for Life Award.
